Light from Heaven

Cambodian Classical Music Ensemble

This unique group of classical musicians from both East and West perform classical Cambodian and folk music on traditional Cambodian and Celtic instruments. Founder Bun Loeung who began his musical career in Battambang, Cambodia in 1945, joined with Dick Hensold and Barbara Weiss in 1986 to form the New International Trio, which played an eclectic mixture of folk, jazz and Cambodian music on Cambodian and western instruments. They released a CD in 1988, which has had airplay across the U.S., received favorable reviews from Folk Roots and Option magazines, and has been heard on NPR's All Things Considered. Jane Lanctot joined the Trio in 1994, and Rak Smey Khemera “Light from Heaven” was formed to focus more on the performance of traditional Cambodian music. In 2002 they racked up another award when their new CD "Light From Heaven" won the Just Plain Folks Best Ethnic/World CD in Hollywood, California. It also wound up on the Top 30 this summer in the west coast area including KUSF San Francisco.
“Light from Heaven” has been in demand all across the US. In performance they play from two "stages", (or two sides of one stage), one of which has a traditional Cambodian percussion, or Pin Peat ensemble (lead by the Cambodian xylophone and gong circle common in both Cambodia and Thailand), the other which has a Cambodian string ensemble featuring two-string bowed fiddles, a hammered dulcimer (khim), wind and percussion.

NDIOBA - African Groove

NDIOBA Gueye is a young Senegalese based in Helsinki, Finland. Over the years, NDIOBA has played with many artists of different genres, from jazz and pop, to rock, blues, funk, hip hop and world music. The nickname “NDIOBASS” says much about his talent as session man and bass player. After succesful years in Paris, where NDIOBA studied music and played in clubs in the end of the 80's, he returned to Senegal to join Tabala band, led by Bara Fall. The band was eventually contracted by Youssou N'Dour to warm up his own concerts. Back in 1992, he was invited to join top Finnish guitarist Hasse Walli . They toured Europe and West Africa with the Asama Band, produced several albums and got two songs onto the Finnish and European charts. Other collaborations in Finland have included Sakari Kukko (the father of World Fusion in the country), Aikakone, Sami Saari, Aki Sirkesalo, Tino Singh. It is only recently that NDIOBA decided to embark on a solo career, where he is acting as composer, arranger, bass player and lead singer. “Music is a universal language to me. I compare it with communication between people. In my solo material I mix African groove, with jazz, salsa, funk, hip-hop and pop. Music diversity is for me like spices in the food”. Most important for NDIOBA is to have a positive attitude in life, and this is what his lyrics are about. “ I want to do my share in helping people. Musicians can often make a great deal of job, maybe more than ordinary politicians. We have many such examples in Senegal.” NDIOBA’s debut album will be released in 2006. Top Finnish and international artists willl join on the album. Ndioba has recently started to tour with his TOPOTO BAND in Finland and the Baltic States. Their premiere in Lithuania at Klaipeda Jazz Festival (http://www.jazz.lt/www/festivalis/naujienos/) has almost made Ndioba a national hero for the quality of his music and his way to communicate with the audience straight to the heart of the listener. DVD to be soon available.
